'The Last Unicorn' 40th Anniversary: Win Tickets to a Special Screening in L.A.!

The 1982 animated film The Last Unicorn is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year with a special screening event! If you need your memory jogged, the film was directed and produced by the legendary team of Arthur Rankin, Jr., and Jules Bass which gave us numerous holiday specials that are still beloved to this day. The story is a journey by the last unicorn outside of her safe realm in hopes to find more of her kind.

The Last Unicorn features the voice talents of Mia Farrow, Christopher Lee, Angela Lansbury, and Jeff Bridges to name a few. The film is gloriously animated with beautiful backdrops along the journey of the film.

I recently watched the film with my daughter and we really enjoyed the story. You can rediscover the movie now on Tubi, The Roku Channel, Freevee, and more streaming services for free.

In conjunction with the anniversary, Rediscover the 80s is proud to give away two tickets to the 40th anniversary event! Enter below and see the rules for entry.

The Last Unicorn 40th Anniversary event is July 30th at 3:00pm-5:00pm at the David Geffen Theater at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. It features a screening of the film followed by a panel featuring author/screenwriter Peter S. Beagle and film producer Michael Chase Walker. The panel will be moderated by Jeff Walker, the long-time publicist and marketing consultant specializing in science fiction, fantasy, horror and animation. There will also be an exclusive capsule collection at the Museum Store, featuring t-shirts, jewelry, and collaborations from well-known Los Angeles pop-culture designer ONCH.

About the event:

In person: screenwriter and author Peter S. Beagle and producer Michael Chase Walker.

The producing and directing duo of Arthur Rankin, Jr., and Jules Bass, best-known for their beloved stop-motion holiday specials, helms a spellbinding adaptation of the beloved 1968 novel The Last Unicorn, adapted for the screen by author Peter S. Beagle himself.

On discovering that she may well be the last of her immortal kind, the Unicorn sets out on a long journey to discover what may have become of the other unicorns. On the way, she encounters a genuinely wicked witch and a village with a shameful secret. She also befriends a bumbling wizard and a bitter, disillusioned outlaw named Molly Grue, meets the mad King Haggard, and, at the last, must challenge the terrible Red Bull she so deeply fears to face.

Animated by some of the same team who would go on to work with Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli, The Last Unicorn is a jewel of a film that has been treasured for generations.

The Academy Museum Store will be offering exclusive merchandise inspired by The Last Unicorn in honor of this special 40th anniversary screening. Visit us in-store or online at academymuseumstore.org on July 30 to get your hands on limited-edition tees, accessories, animation cels, and skateboard decks.
