Bill Elliot reaches and sets to the stock car speed record of 212.23 MPH (K.I.T.T. did it first!) on May 1st.

The Chernobyl nuclear event is reported by the Russian news entity Tass on May 1st.

On May 1st, the expedition to the North Pole is reached by Will Stegers team.

Dr. James Fletcher is appointed as the NASA Administrator by President Ronald Reagan on May 12th.

Margaret Thatcher is the first British prime minister to visit Israel on May 24th.

6.5 million people joined hands for a charity event, Hands Across America, on May 25th reaching from New York to California.

On May 30th, the MLB debut of Barry Bonds occurs as he plays for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
