The Ooze Holds Up After 35 Years

Thank you to Saga Arts and Fathom Entertainment for sponsoring Rediscover the '80s and out podcasts for the past two months.  These two entities brought back the TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze to theaters March 13-19, 2026.

With this event, I ensured to carve out a Saturday to spend some quality time with four of my sons while reliving my youth watching this bodacious movie.  All six of my children have watched variations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to include the first live action movie I still possess in DVD form.  However, they haven't been frequent watchers.  Nonetheless, I hyped up the event, telling them we'll get to watch a great movie with awesome action and funny moments.

My oldest was not very thrilled.  He is not nostalgic and has yet to get into much of the television and movies I enjoyed in the '80s and early '90s.  There are exceptions, but by and large he's his own person (takes after mom :)  ).  My second son has been emulating me; he enjoys much of my nostalgia media to include the music.  He's almost a mini-me.  The third and fourth son are more followers and intrigued that they get to see a movie in the theater and eat popcorn than much else.

March 14th, we head on down to the local Regal theater for an afternoon showing.  Sadly, there are no posters, there is nothing visible that shows that the TMNT II movie is showing.  This is the same theater that had the same zero hype for the female Ghostbusters movie that I watched and reviewed a few years ago.

On with the adventure, we walk in and secure our refreshments and make our journey to theater room 5.  Walking into the theater, we go sit in our backrow seats and prepare ourselves for a great movie.  Bringing paper bowls, we dish out the popcorn for each of us while my oldest clings to the large bucket.  The younger boys are anxious, asking about the movie, what they'll see, while I'm already chanting "Go Ninja Go" with the boys.  My second son is all a glee, the younger ones are laughing and chuckling as I'm reciting lines that I still faintly remember several years later.

The lights begin to dim as we settle in for the lengthy advertisements, yet one familiar person appears to welcome us to the show.
That's right!  The Ice man himself, as I'm frantically getting my phone and snapping pics before his greeting disappears, Vanilla Ice welcomes us to the movie and hypes the movie and the Love the '90s Tour.  I quickly tell the boys this is who raps the Ninja Rap towards the later portion of the movie.

The movie begins and right away I'm asked about all the pizza eating.  I replied it's because the Turtles all love pizza and now New York City really wants to eat pizza.  The movie continues and they have a blast with it.  Laughing a Donatello swaying at one of the Foot Clan members, Michelangelo with the yo-yo tricks, and so on.  They had a very great time.  My sons all had fun with Vanilla Ice's Ninja Rap and my second son was making up his own version of the dance beside me all while laughing at the burping from Rahzar and Tokka.

All of my sons, including my oldest, were very impressed and thoroughly enjoyed the movie.  Thankfully, I own the trilogy DVD set so we'll be breaking that out soon and watching these movies again...and soon!

Thank you again Saga Arts and Fathom Entertainment for bringing back the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles back to the theaters.  We had a cowbunga of a time!
