Time once again for the best links I've stumbled across this past week that involve 80s pop culture. I always have a great time putting this together!
I hope you have been enjoying the daily rediscovered album that I've been posting to Facebook and Twitter. I've come to the conclusion that "greatest hits" albums have robbed my music experience. When I finally was old enough and had the means to control what albums to buy, it was the height of the Columbia House/BMG experience in the early 90s. Remember those "Get 12 CDs for a Penny" offers? I think we all got suckered into them. As I look at my CD collection now, I realize I went for the greatest hits albums more than anything. Because of that, I never really heard many of the hit singles in their rightful context. I've started a small vinyl collection mainly to rediscover all those Not Top 40 tracks that have been waiting for me all these years. I've been scoping YouTube for full albums to experience and decided to share those on the RD80s Facebook and Twitter feeds. It's a fact...there is new '80s music out there just waiting to be discovered!

- Last week marked the 20th anniversary of the death of River Phoenix. THR put together a nice photographic history of his life.
- A lost, never-released track by Peter Gabriel has recently been made known. Apparently the track came from the 1986 So album recording sessions. Here's a quote from Gabriel himself via his YouTube channel:
A true 'lost' gem, the track 'Courage' had never been previously released, or even heard by fans, until the So Box Set release last year. It's a song that was very much part of the So album recording sessions but was never finished; until now...
Whilst the original version remains exclusive to the So Box Set, this new 'finished' version is mixed by Tchad Blake and has new overdubs from Peter and David Rhodes (guitar). It retains all the spirit and charm of the original version but is now heard through the filter of experience that is the intervening 25 years.
"When So drew to a close I didn't feel the song was delivering in the way I had hoped, so decided not to include it. When we were reviewing all the material from that time, we wanted to take a fresh look at it and get it finished. I always liked the track and very much enjoyed the playing on it, especially the energy of the drums" -- Peter Gabriel
