Actor and former U.S. Representative Ben Jones passed away on August 9, 2026 at the age of 84 after succumbing to a heart attack.
Ben Jones was born in Edgecombe County, NC on August 30, 1941 and later graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1959. He worked a number of jobs and before landing acting positions in local theaters and festivals. He became known in television appearing in Smokey and the Bandit before landing the role he is best known for, Cooter Davenport "Crazy Cooter" on The Dukes of Hazzard.
Ben Jones served for the United States for Congress in 1988 and again in 1990 and ran for office a number of times, even against Newt Gingrich.
Finally, in 1999 along with his wife Alma, he founded and opened Cooter's Museum and Store which has welcomed visitors around the world and held many fantastic events all to continue to keep nostalgia of The Dukes of Hazzard alive.
